It’s one thing to say everything is made of particles, but what is a particle?

Happy Birthday #Martin_Perl, the Discoverer of an elementary particle #Tau

Perl discovered a subatomic particle that he named the tau, a massive lepton with a negative charge. The tau, which he found in the mid-1970s, was the first evidence of a third “generation” of fundamental particles. It is a superheavy cousin of the electron, identical in all respects except that the tau is more than 3,500 times heavier than the electron and survives less than a trillionth of a second, whereas the electron is stable.

Perl won the Nobel Prize in 1995 jointly with Frederick Reines. The prize was awarded “for pioneering experimental contributions to lepton physics”. Perl received half “for the discovery of the tau lepton” while Reines received his share “for the detection of the neutrino”.

“The calculations that eventually got me a Nobel Prize in 2004 would have been literally unthinkable without Feynman diagrams” – 2004 Physics Laureate Frank Wilczek about the research of Richard Feynman, awarded the 1965 #NobelPrize in Physics for “fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics, with deep-ploughing consequences for the physics of elementary particles”.
