Domestic cats appear to be indifferent to many human activities, including our music. But scientists at the University of Wisconsin – Madison have shown that cats do respond to music written especially for them. Creating music for our feline friends means accounting for differences in their hearing and sensory systems. For example, cats can hear much higher pitches than humans, and they respond to tempos that resemble purring and the sucking noises made during nursing. A new study in Applied Animal Behaviour Science tested two cat songs against two pieces of classical music written for humans. The cats expressed significantly more positive responses, such as purring and walking towards or rubbing against the speaker, for the cat music than the human music. The researchers say that music written especially for different species could help calm them in shelters and zoos.
