As reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a rose’s “veins” – its xylem – were filled with ETE-S, a conductive solution that spontaneously forms “wires” through its stems, leaves, and petals. The rose’s own biochemical processes act as the catalyst for the proliferation of the gel, with no external stimulus required.

Scientists have been working to create an atlas of the mouse brain for more than a decade in order to better understand the basics of how the brain works and what can happen when the brain malfunctions. Scientists at the University of Southern California looked in detail at the brain connections in the dorsal striatum, a part of the brain that helps with motor learning. Scientists injected fluorescent molecules into about 150 mouse brain structures and used a high-resolution microscope to document the molecules as they moved through the brain’s “cellular highways.” In work published in Nature Neuroscience, researchers were able to identify 29 distinct areas responsible for things such as eye movement, mouth and facial movements and pain information processing.

In a new study in Nature, scientists at the Allen Institute, Harvard Medical School, and other universities have published the largest network to date of connections between neurons in the cortex, where high-level processing occurs, and have revealed several crucial elements of how networks in the brain are organized. The researchers identified individual neurons in the mouse visual cortex then made ultra-thin slices of brain and captured millions of detailed images of those targeted cells and synapses, which were then reconstructed in three dimensions, along with connections between individual neurons. The scientists say these results are key to understanding the structure of neural networks, and how structure governs function.
